Getting Involved: Organizations Dedicated to Squirrels and Other Mammals

UW Campus Groups and Organizations

While there are no groups at the UW specifically devoted to mammals (or squirrels), here are some organizations whose mission encompasses the study of mammals.

The Wildlife Society
http://students.washington.edu/uwtws/ - UW Chapter website

The Wildlife Society at the UW is dedicated to spreading awareness about wildlife issues and providing events and activities to educate people on the different animals (including mammals) of the world. This group organizes many events to get its members out in the community and learning about animals of the world such as private visits to the Burke Museum, hiking tours, and volunteer opportunities. The UW Wildlife Society requires a membership application and fee, but is a good way to get involved in wildlife issues on a national and global scale.

The Young Naturalists' Society of the Pacific Northwest

This dedicated group of UW students works to "keep the art of natural history alive through experiential learning and field observations of organisms in their native environments". While not exclusively dedicated to the study of mammals, this group provides opportunities to get out in nature and learn with a group.

National Groups and Organizations

The Wildlife Society (National)

This is the national version of the aforementioned UW club of the same name. They are similarly dedicated to organizing events to get members out and experiencing animals all over the world, but they are also working with experts and volunteers in the field of wildlife rehabilitation. Like the UW chapter, this organization requires a membership application and fee. They offer all sorts of wildlife conferences, working groups, and other opportunities.

PAWS
http://www.paws.org/

This national organization isn't just devoted to cats and dogs. Located in Linwood, Washington, it acts as a rehabilitation center for injured and orphaned wildlife all over the country. They are always accepting volunteers and provide hands on experience with wild animals of all sorts as well as the opportunity to help animals in need.

Squirrel Refuge
http://squirrelrefuge.org/

This organization is dedicated to the ethical treatment and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned squirrels. Their mission is to provide sanctuary to these squirrels and to educate people on the proper techniques for caring for young squirrels, squirrel diseases to watch out for, and other helpful information.

Worldwide Groups and Organizations

The Squirrel Lovers Club
http://www.thesquirrelloversclub.com/

This organization was founded in 1995 by Greg Bassett and their efforts have expanded into Squirrel Awareness and Appreciation Month in October. Anyone can join, the only requirements being that one must believe that "squirrels matter" and in the well-being and humane treatment of squirrels all over the world. Members receive their newsletter, In A Nutshell, which provides facts on squirrels, information on squirrel care and feeding, articles, photos, and stories.

Animal Behavior Society
http://animalbehaviorsociety.org/

This society is for anyone interested in the study of animal behavior. Their members come from all over the world and their site provides information on meetings, new journals published on behavior, and other advances in the study of animal behavior.
